How Do Children Learn to Read?
The art of reading is memorable - and often difficult to achieve. Learning to read is very contrasting from learning to talk; in the evolution of human history, talking anticipates reading by thousands of years.
Learning how to read requires a lot complex achivements. Children face challenges as they: 1. learn how sounds are associated to print, 2. achieve fluency, and 3. learn to create definitions. Our Alphabet App Mario Alphabet focuses on this points.
1. How kids associate phonetic sounds to printed letters?
Individual letters are meaningless. The letters must be connected to equally abstract sounds called phonemes, merged together and pronounced as words, where definition is finally accomplished.
Kids must understand the connection between sounds and letters.
For the development of accurate and rapid word reading skills , it is necesarry that the kid understands that written spellings represent phonemes of spoken words.
Importance of the phoneme awareness
If a child can not perceive the difference of sound words, will have difficulty decoding words in a fast and correct way. For example, the kid must be able to differentiate the sound of hat and cat, he must be ablet to know that the difference lies in the first sound.
Phoneme awareness with Montessori Methodology
In Montessori Methodology, child will start the process only if he is ready, never forcing the child to engage in a work if they are not ready. The process starts with the sensitive period, where kid learns what sound the letters make. It is recommended to spend a lot of time on oral language development and ear training development before moving to next stage.
The Alphabetic Principle
Knowledge of letter sounds, and shapes is a predictor of succes in learning to read. This is because knowing the letter sounds is greatly related to kids ability to remember the forms of words and also the capacity to treat words as sequence of letters. Marios Alphabet App focuses on this aspect.
But what is the Alphabetic principle?- basically is learnning the relationships between sounds and letters, and then being able to apply them to words, so later be able to read with fluency. Therefore the alphabetic principle.
How is the alphabetic principle included in Marios Alphabet App?
Children learn letter-sound relationships in isolation.
App provides the opportunities to kids to practice letter-sound relationships.
App provides opportunities to apply the learned concepts of sound and letter relationships to the phonetically spelled words that are familiar and fun for them!
